Currently attacks with manipulated PDF documents that take advantage of a vulnerability in Adobe Reader and Adobe Acrobat to smuggle in harmful software are taking place
Tettnang, 20 February 2009 – Criminals are taking advantage of a vulnerability that Adobe has confirmed. Avira’s security solutions recognize the manipulated PDF files and protect users.
The infectious PDF files have appeared in emails. They use some tricks to infiltrate and execute harmful code using the programming language JavaScript. The anti-virus solutions of the German IT security specialist Avira recognize the harmful PDF files with the virus definition file 7.01.02.53 as EXP/Pidief.IN.
We have no detailed information on the vulnerability; Adobe promises to provide an update, but not until 11 March. Until then an anti-virus solution such as Avira AntiVir Professional for business users or Avira AntiVir Personal, Avira AntiVir Premium or Avira Premium Security Suite for private users – is a good help to deactivate the support for JavaScript in the Adobe software. Adobe users should download and install the update for Adobe Reader for versions 9 and older on 11 March.
